Functional Capacity Evaluation

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) as applied to the workers compensation system is a series of standardised tests used to assess a worker's functional capacities for work.

They provide a valid and reliable method to determine an individual’s safe and maximal performance of specific work-related tasks, so the functional work ability of the client is determined and if needed correlated to the job demands.

The results of the evaluation can be utilised for:

  • Determination of the individual’s residual functional abilities
  • Disability determination
  • Pre-placement job screening
  • Vocational exploration
  • Return to work decisions
  • Litigation case guidance
A Functional Capacity Evaluation determines an individual's ability to perform physical work by conducting a performance evaluation to evaluate a person's maximum capabilities in the following areas:
  • Dynamic Strength
  • Position Tolerance
  • Mobility
  • Coordination
  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Balance
  • Endurance
